I was so grateful for the massive response by parishioners who completed postcards at the end of masses last weekend. The photo shows the painstaking work by our Parish Administrator, Minna, who sorted them all into the respective constituencies of M.P.s. They were all posted off to reach Parliament by Friday’s debate. It is clear that quite a few M.P.s have now changed their minds and that there has been a significant swing in opinion. The implications of the dreadful proposal have come to light. Let us keep our prayer and action to do all we can to oppose the passing of the Assisted Dying Bill.

Parish Meeting on Sunday 12 January

Thank you very much indeed to the good number of you who turned up for the Parish Meeting last Sunday. Some very good points and ideas were raised and the minutes of the meeting will be published in the week ahead. I am also going to produce a simple “Parish Plan” like the one we had a year or so ago, so that we can keep track of the things we are trying to achieve and bring to fulfilment in the parish.

Mass to see in the new year

Following requests from parishioners, I am very glad to put on a special mass on New Year’s Eve. This will begin at 11.00 p.m. and will contain some special prayers of blessing as well as a consecration of parishioners for the New Year. Thank you to those of you who have signed up to commit to attending the mass. Of course it is open to everyone, but we do need to keep safe on an evening when more people are out and about celebrating, so the doors will be closed once mass has begun. Please arrive by 10.45 p.m. We will be in mass at 00.00 to mark the arrival of the New Year.

Choir on Tour

September 14th - Didsbury

Our wonderful choir, unsurprisingly, has received quite a few invitations to support events outside the parish such as weddings and funerals. Before Christmas, the choir will be performing at least three concerts at other churches and venues. These are all open to parishioners and in fact your support is encouraged and very welcome. The next such event is on Saturday 14 September at St Catherine’s Church in Didsbury. The choir will sing at the evening Mass at 7.00 p.m. and then perform a concert afterwards. Tickets for the Mass will be available on the door. Please do come along to the Mass and/or concert.

The Legion of Mary: Thank You!

Thank you to the Legion of Mary for a grace-filled week of unstinting hard work, prayer and devotion. Thanks to all parishioners who supported in any way, especially at the Mass on Friday evening. In particular I wish to thank members of the choir, altar servers and those who provided hospitality and refreshments in the Parish Centre afterwards. Thank you to Minna, the Parish Administrator who single-handedly provided top quality food for the ten legionaries for the whole week. Please pray to the Holy Spirit about the possibility of forming a Legion of Mary group in our own parish.

Legion of Mary Mission

Ten “legionnaires” from the Legion of Mary will be working in the parish from 6 to 13 July. On their last night, Friday 12 July at 7.00 p.m. , there will be a special Mass to which it is hoped many people they have met in the parish through their door to door visits will come. Please put this date in your diary as I really would like the parish to be there in force to welcome those people who are, please God, returning to the fold.

Sacramental Marriage: Are You Married Before God?

Convalidation

Sometimes couples have married civilly at a Registry Office or other venue, but have not married in church. Such a marriage is not sacramental. Catholics are called to be married sacramentally before God. It is possible for civilly married couples to undertake a “Convalidation” which is a Catholic rite that confers Sacramental Marriage. It has been a great blessing in the parish to conduct such convalidations. If this is your situation, please speak to me if you would like to discuss the possibility of arranging for a convalidation.

5th Sunday Lent (B)

“Sir, we should like to see Jesus”

In the Gospel reading, some Greeks approach Philip and say, “Sir, we should like to see Jesus.” It is clear from all four Gospels that Jesus’ reputation spread quickly and all sorts of people were attracted to him and went out of their way in order to meet him, including sinners, outcasts and foreigners.

Surely, as we continue on our journey of faith, the request of the Greeks is one that we should be making all the time: “We should like to see Jesus.” The prophet Jeremiah in fact predicts a time when people will no longer have to say, “Learn to know the Lord,” because they will have come to know God and experienced his forgiveness.

There are still two weeks of Lent left and still opportunities to “see Jesus” in the Sacrament of Confession, on Saturday mornings, before the two weekend Masses, and at the Reconciliation Service on Tuesday 26 March.

Then Holy Week itself offers profound opportunities to “see Jesus” as we commemorate the Institution of the Eucharist on Maundy Thursday, Christ’s Passion and Death on Good Friday, and his glorious Resurrection at the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday and Easter Sunday Masses. I urge you to make the most of these opportunities.

2nd Sunday Lent (B)

This is my Son, the Beloved.

In the Gospels, Jesus speaks about his Father in heaven, and at key moments, the voice of the Father speaking about the Son is heard. This happens first at Jesus’ baptism, and the affirmation of the Father helps to launch Jesus on his mission. In today’s reading, at Jesus’ Transfiguration, the voice from of the Father speaks from the cloud, “This is my Son, the Beloved.”

The experience is surely an encouragement for Peter, James and John, who soon were to see Jesus crucified; and it is surely another affirmation that will help Jesus to remain in a rock-solid love-relationship with his Father, through the worst of human ordeals.

In Lent, there can be a danger for us that we somehow think that through our efforts of prayer, fasting, penance and almsgiving, we are going to get rewarded or be loved more by God. But God’s love for us in unconditional and we cannot earn it.

It is more the case that our Lenten devotions will help us to hear the loving voice of God through the cloud. It is very hard for us to be loving disciples of the Lord, offering our lives in service to those around us, if we have not first experienced the love that God has for us. Lent is a good time to pray for a new experience of the Father’s love.
